Case study: Visual Fuel Economy Guide 2007

In its second year of release, our Visual Fuel Economy Guide is designed to provide U.S. car buyers an easy-to-read visual alternative to the government's Fuel Economy Guide 2007, produced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Designing information as a useful tool
Each year the U.S. EPA and U.S. DOE produce a Fuel Economy Guide to provide the U.S. public with information on new vehicles and their fuel consumption costs. The guide uses numerical tables to organize vehicle information. While compact in size, the numerical table format does not facilitate quick, broad comparisons within the large amounts of data, making the guide difficult to use (example shown to the right).

The Visual Fuel Economy Guide uses bar charts to improve access by visual comparison. Why? Our eyes are faster at seeing quantitative differences in bar lengths than our mind is at reading, holding and calculating the differences between a large bunch of numbers. This visual guide also includes several ranking features to help the reader determine whether vehicles are below, equal to, or above the average fuel economy for their respective vehicle class.
