Case study: RTP xPOS diagramsSoftware company Resort Technology Partners needed a series of diagrams to explain the function and value of Microsoft's .NET technology and how RTP's software line uses it for transaction order processing. Through interviews with software engineers and programmers, important components of the .NET architecture were identified and included to explain how the technology works. Accompanying ext was also written to provide a non-technical audience with enough knowledge to grasp the general value of the .NET programming architecture. The first diagram describes how Microsoft’s XML architecture is used to power RTP’s point of sale software. A Lego brick metaphor favored by RTP’s software engineers was chosen as a way to emphasize the modular structure of RTP’s software product and how it affords great room for client customization. Icons shown were adopted and modified from Microsoft’s existing icon sets. The second diagram details how Microsoft's .NET provides connectivity to other systems and RTP's various solution package options for its resort clients. It provides a general overview of the software’s options along with details on how software components can be purchased as part of pre made or custom “solution packages” to offer scalable flexibility. Icons shown were adopted and modified from Microsoft’s existing icon sets.
