Definition of Design

Design is any practice or activity that involves a process of conceiving, planning, shaping and ultimately executing an artificial form or idea that responds to a need. A narrower definition is designers create forms that communicate an idea, to which people assign their own meaning and value.

Historically, "design" has been perceived to mean "graphic design." This is inaccurate for much of design work. Design really covers a large number of different skill sets involved in the creative process (such as those indicated in the other definitions). A designer acts as inventor, planner, negotiator and manager between possibility and reality, working to create something people find meaningful both in form and function.
